Exploring Common Sports Injuries and Their Causes

When you’re active in sports, you’re keeping your body in great shape, but you’re always at risk for injury. Although you may not be able to completely avoid injuries, there are things you can do to cut your odds of experiencing common ones. Here is a look at some common types of injuries suffered by athletes and how you can reduce your chances of suffering one.

Ankle Injuries

Ankle injuries, such as sprains, are extremely common. Often, injuries are the result of ligaments or tendons being overstretched or a bone cracking or fracturing. This can happen by landing on the ankle wrong while running or jumping or pivoting quickly. The best way to reduce your risk of ankle injuries is to stay in game-ready condition, as weakened muscles provide inadequate support. You should also practice your form so that you are not repeatedly doing movements that put your ankles at risk.

Groin Pulls

A groin pull occurs the muscles in the inner thighs become strained, usually as the result of making side-to-side motions. You have a heightened risk of groin pulls if you play hockey, football, baseball, and soccer. Practicing your form is also helpful in reducing your risk of a groin pull. If you experience one, it’s important to stop activity right away, as you could make the injury worse.

Hamstring Pulls

Your hamstring consists of three muscles in the back of your thighs. These muscles can easily become strained by activities that involve kicking out the leg, causing a hamstring pull. Hurdling, dancing, and waterskiing are common causes of hamstring pulls. Once again, good conditioning and form will reduce the risk.
