  • What Are the Most Likely Causes of Your Back Pain?

    back pain picture

Back pain is a crippling ailment that affects many people.  But, before you seek out the services of a physical therapist or a massage therapist, read through the following common causes of back pain to pinpoint the source of your discomfort.

    • Muscle strains are a very common cause of back pain. There are over thirty muscles in your back, and straining, pulling, or tearing just one can cause serious back pain. When you consider how much we use our backs for in our daily lives—just the simple act of standing uses back muscles —it’s no wonder that we strain those muscles, resulting in back pain.
    • Subluxation or misalignment of the vertebrae in the back can also cause pain. The bones in the back are meant to line up a certain way, and when they don’t, the result is painful. Taking good care of your back by maintaining good posture and using proper lifting techniques can help keep your back in line.
    • Herniated discs also cause a great deal of back pain. These happen when the cushioning surrounding the discs in the back fails and the delicate nerves compress. Repetitive motions and injuries can cause herniated discs, so be sure to rest adequately after any intense strain on your back.
    • Osteoarthritis and other medical conditions affecting the bones, ligaments, tendons, and joints in the back can cause severe back pain. Spinal stenosis that develops on its own or is caused by osteoarthritis can be very painful.  This condition causes the spinal canal to narrow, restricting the drainage of fluids and flow of blood.
    • Some other systemic medical conditions, like fibromyalgia, cause an intense amount of back pain. This pain can be debilitating, and often requires immediate attention from a physical therapist or other orthopedic professional.

  • Care Tips for After Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a treatment method, often used in conjunction with physical therapy, sports medicine, and massage therapy, that aims to relieve various aches and pains. To experience the maximum benefit from your treatments, you should take special care of yourself before and after your treatment sessions.  Use the following aftercare tips to get the most out of acupuncture:

    • Schedule your acupuncture appointment outside of a busy schedule and give yourself time to rest afterwards. You probably don’t want to head into an important business meeting right after your treatment, but a nice relaxing chat with a close friend or your spouse is a good idea. You may feel very relaxed when you are done with your acupuncture, and you want to allow your body to stay in that state of relaxation for as long as needed.
    • Don’t plan any physical activities for several hours after your acupuncture treatment. A slow walk is generally okay, but don’t overexert yourself or try to run a marathon.
    • Don’t eat a large meal after your acupuncture session. Avoid alcohol consumption as well. Eat a small, light meal, and drink plenty of water—you might try a cup of green tea to help rejuvenate your body and mind.
    • Keep a list of any changes you experience. Sometimes, symptoms will briefly worsen after acupuncture, but don’t worry; this is a typical side-effect of an effective treatment session. Take note of these changes so you can discuss them with your acupuncture provider . Also, write down how you felt after your appointment and in the days following your treatment to monitor the treatment’s efficacy.
