• Sciatica vs. Piriformis Syndrome: Is There a Difference?

Many people tend to assume that sharp pain through the buttocks and down the leg must be caused by sciatica. However, another condition called piriformis syndrome produces almost identical symptoms, but has a very different cause. If you are experiencing these symptoms, you may require chiropractic care or massage therapy . Determining which treatment is right for you will depend on identifying the cause of your pain.

    Sciatica
Sciatic occurs when a spinal problem, such as a herniated disc, exerts pressure on a nerve root, compressing the nerve and causing pain to radiate down the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve runs from the spinal cord, through the hips and buttocks, and down each leg. That is why, even if the nerve is compressed at the spine, the pain is more often felt in the leg. Because sciatica originates in the spinal column, chiropractic treatment is usually the preferred approach. You may also benefit from seeing a physical therapist, depending on the cause of your spinal condition.

    Piriformis Syndrome
Piriformis syndrome also involves the sciatic nerve, which is why the pain is so similar to that of true sciatica. However, the cause of the pain is nerve compression at the piriformis muscles, not the spine. This muscle is situated at the top of the buttocks, close to the hip joint. If this muscle becomes damaged due to overuse or injury, or experiences a spasm, the underlying sciatic nerve may become compressed, causing pain. Piriformis syndrome is best treated with massage therapy because of its muscular cause. Only a trained and skilled specialist can determine whether the cause of your pain is skeletal or muscular, so it is important to schedule an appointment with a reputable treatment center.
