  • Can Your Diet Contribute to the Onset of Headaches or Migraines?

    If you suffer from persistent or severe headaches or migraines, it’s a good idea to keep a food journal to determine potential triggers. While some foods have been known to facilitate migraine development, more research is needed in this area. In addition to considering dietary factors such as those listed below, you can work with a physical medicine expert to develop a treatment plan for your symptoms, such as one that includes medical massage therapy and other types of physical medicine, including acupuncture.

    Chocolate 
    Chocolate is often blamed for causing migraines and headaches. However, at least one study questions the link. Instead, stress and fluctuating hormone levels could trigger your chocolate cravings. Since stress and hormonal issues can also trigger migraines and headaches, your chocolate cravings could in fact foreshadow a future headache, though they may not be the cause of it.

    Caffeine 
    A small amount of caffeine can actually ease your migraine symptoms because it facilitates the absorption of pain medications. However, drinking too much coffee or soda can indeed contribute to the development of migraines . Try to limit yourself to no more than 200 milligrams of caffeine daily. If you currently use more than this, cut down gradually to avoid withdrawal symptoms, such as headache.

    Alcohol 
    Alcohol has been known to trigger migraines; however, the amount required to cause the symptoms vary from person to person. You might find that just a few sips of a cocktail cause your symptoms, while another person can safely consume one beverage without trouble. Listen to your body and avoid or limit your alcohol consumption as needed.

    Additives and Sweeteners 
    Food additives such as nitrates and monosodium glutamate (MSG), and sweeteners such as aspartame have often been blamed for migraines. Researchers have yet to reach a consensus on whether there is an association; however, if you suffer from severe migraines, you may wish to choose a more natural diet and skip the artificial ingredients, just in case.

  • A Quick Look at TMJ

    If you were to take your finger and place it upon the joint that hinges the lower jaw to the bone around your temples, you would be touching what is commonly referred to as the TMJ, or temporomandibular joint. When this joint or the facial muscles that surround it become inflamed or injured, the irritation can become exacerbated until it develops into a TMD, or temporomandibular disorder. These types of disorders, which are commonly referred to incorrectly as “TMJ,” can also be caused by arthritis, teeth grinding, and stress.
